Carol Vernaills's theory

Carol Vernallis studied about editing and camerawork used in music videos. She found that edits are used much more frequently in music video then in film and they seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song.

Here are her main point:

  • Jump cuts are often used.
  • The usual rules of continuity editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen.
  • A master shot is frequently used to give the video a structure.
  • The camera may move in time with the music
  • Edits can be really obvious drawing attention to themselves, such as wipes and special effects. This is seen clearly in Example's Kickstart:
